I read the original novel many times as a teenager, decades ago
It’s a great story with many effective images, highly recommended, if a bit dated – published in 1949, seventy-five years ago. Although I’ve often wondered over the years if it would ever become a film, I wasn’t expecting this limited series adaptation, so I was very surprised when it came out. Also very worried, as it remains one of my favorite reads ever. "People come and go, but the earth remains" is an oft-used quote for me.
I finished it saying, "Wow!
I watched the first episode with some trepidation. That was really good!" Seeing Ish staring at the smoke from Emma’s house brought the images of the book to life. Sure, it’s been modernized in many ways out of necessity, but the important aspects of the plot remain essentially the same. The rattlesnake bite, finding Lucky the dog (the princess in the book), Milt and Ann.
"The World Without End!"
Other changes, like limiting Ish’s trip to Las Vegas instead of Atlantic City, make sense and aren’t critical to the character interactions. Also, the way the book is structured makes the limited series a great production choice. I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of this series. "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
